Heart Made Cookies for the Month of Love

Foodie mom Chyi tells us how Valentine's month reminds her of the sweet treats that she had in Japan, and how she enjoys the spirit of baking and sharing joy with others by making recipes like this one.

Love is in the air! Valentine's Day on February 14 always reminds me about how the occasion is marked in Japan, where it is widely celebrated.

It is a time when females give something sweet, such as chocolate, cookies, or candies to their male counterparts, not only their significant others, but also to other male family members, friends, classmates, and coworkers. Some women also exchange sweet treats among themselves to share the joy. Valentine’s Day is also a time when school-aged girls might experiment with new chocolate or cookie recipes.

This month, I would like to share a simple air fryer recipe for chocolate chip cookies that I often like to bake. It is also a good recipe to make together with young children.

Ingredients (makes 12–15 cookies)

  • ½ cup of butter, softened
  • ⅓ cup of white sugar
  • ⅓ cup of brown sugar
  • 1 large egg (room temperature)
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • ⅛ teaspoon of lemon juice
  • 1.5 cups of all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup of rolled oats
  • ½ teaspoon of baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon of salt
  • 1–1.5 cups of chocolate chips (semi-sweet)

Steps

  1. Blend the butter and sugar (white and brown) with a hand mixer until well blended. Add the egg, vanilla, and lemon juice, and blend until light and fluffy.
  2. In a bowl, combine the flour, oats, baking soda and salt. Add the flour mixture into the batter and mix until it is well combined (for no longer than one minute). Add in the chocolate chips with a wooden spoon. Do not overmix.
  3. Line your air fryer basket with foil or baking paper.
  4. Using a spoon, make your batter into small balls weighing about 35–40 grams each. Place them in the air fryer, leaving some space between the cookie dough balls.
  5. Bake at 150°C for about 6–8 minutes. The first batch may take 1–2 minutes longer if the air fryer is not already hot.
  6. Leave to cool and enjoy!
