In My Heart: A Book of Feelings

by Jo Witek and Christine Roussey

Originally published as “Dans Mon Petit Cœur” in French in 2013, “In My Heart” has become an international bestseller recommended by play therapists and counselors. It ebbs and flows with relatable and lyrical descriptions of emotions from calm and excited to silly and serious, heartbreak and hope. Told through the perspective of a young child exploring their feelings, the message is that there are no right or wrong emotions as they are all important and normal. “In My Heart” is a helpful conversation starter for young children beginning to familiarize themselves with their own feelings.

While we shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, it’s impossible not to be charmed by the rainbow die-cut heart at the center of this book. Each page reveals a new cut-out heart image and delightful illustrations by award-winning artist Christine Roussey. More importantly, the content of the book matches the beautiful art, thanks to the talents of author Jo Witek. Roussey and Witek have collaborated on nine books in the Growing Hearts series, all of which foster socioemotional learning for young readers.

Published by Abrams Appleseed in October 2014. Suitable for ages 2–6.  A hardcover copy along with other works by Witek and Roussey can be found in the Children’s Corner of the library.

Dr. Becky Kennedy is an acclaimed clinical psychologist and bestselling author of “Good Inside”. Part one of the book breaks down Dr. Becky’s ten parenting principles, which she backs with science, her experience as a mother of three, and her professional work counseling families and children. At the core of these principles for raising mentally healthy children is the belief that all people, children, and adults, are inherently “good inside”.

In part two, Dr. Becky offers connection-based strategies for holding boundaries and breaks down specific challenging behaviors that are common among children. Throughout the book, she also emphasizes the importance of parents nurturing their own mental well-being. Dr. Becky reminds us to not only have grace for our children but also for ourselves and everyone we cross paths with.

Published by Harper in September 2022. A hardcover copy can be found in the nonfiction section of the library.
