“Goldfish on Vacation” is a charming story about three children, their grandfather, and their three pet goldfish living in the big city. What starts off as a seemingly boring school break in the concrete jungle becomes an unforgettable summer vacation. The children and their grandfather excitedly join other families as the neighborhood fountain is filled with lily pads and fresh water and transformed into a guppy’s sanctuary. By the end of summer break the children learn that adventure awaits, sometimes right outside your window or at the end of the street.

This fun tale is based on the true story of the restoration of New York City’s historic Hamilton Fountain. Author Sally Lloyd-Jones is a bestselling writer originally from the UK and now based in the States. Illustrator Leo Espinosa is an award-winning artist originally from Colombia and also based in the States. Their talents come together to create this delightful picture book filled with nostalgia, anticipation, imagination, community, and care.

Published by Anne Schwartz Books in April 2018. Suitable for ages 3–8.  A hardcover copy along with other works by Lloyd-Jones and Espinosa can be found in the Children’s Corner of the library.

Bad Summer People: A novel
by Emma Rosenblum

Cover of Bad Summer People: A novel by Emma Rosenblum

This bestselling dark comedy murder mystery is the perfect escapist page-turner for parents juggling a busy summer break. It is filled with drama, deceit, gossip, and twists and turns that will keep you engaged until the epilogue. Set in a remote and fictional part of Fire Island, the novel has “White Lotus” vibes and comically despicable characters that are deeply unlikeable yet surprisingly compelling.

Author Emma Rosenblum is the chief content creator for Bustle, and this is her debut novel based on her own life experiences summering on Fire Island since childhood. Although all characters are fictionalized, a leaked manuscript created drama within Rosenblum’s own community prior to the book’s publication. The guessing game behind the book’s problematic characters could be a novel in itself. “Bad Summer People” has been optioned in Hollywood to become a limited series.

Published by Flatiron Books in May 2023. A hardcover copy can be found in the fiction section of the library.
