Dear Members,
This month’s magazine focuses on parenting in the age of Artificial Intelligence (AI).
There was a time when my biggest concern about technology and parenting was simply how much screen-time my son was getting. The solution seemed straightforward: set limits, put the screens away, and spend more time talking, playing, exploring, and simply being together. I believed that creating a nurturing environment was, in many ways, enough.
Then came school. Suddenly, there were devices in the hands of his peers, school-assigned apps that became part of his homework, and now, personal devices are required for school. What once felt like a parenting choice has become an increasingly difficult balancing act. On one hand, I worry about the impact of growing up surrounded by screens. On the other hand, technology is now an unavoidable part of the world and the answer cannot be to simply keep it away, but instead to teach him how to use it responsibly and develop a sense of control over it from an early age.
And just as we are learning to navigate this new normal, the questions grow bigger. Research is raising concerns about the effects of screen-time on children. Sweden has reconsidered its digital-first classrooms. Countries are drawing boundaries around social media access. And now, AI is reshaping how we think, learn, work, and interact, sometimes at the expense of our own critical thinking. I often wonder what kind of world my son will inherit, and how I can prepare him for jobs that may not even exist yet.
Perhaps more than ever, parenting calls us to be intentional: to stay informed, question what we are told, and make discerning choices within our means and values. We may not be able to predict the future, but we can shape the environment in which our children grow, learn, and discover who they are.
And perhaps, that is where it all begins.
Warm Regards,
